Some of my fondest memories of my entire life are of going to the Southwest in the summers of 1986 and 1987 with a group of nerdlings from OMSI. On the latter trip, we discovered the unbelievable yumminess that is called "fry bread." Imagine 28 screaming teenagers demanding that the bus driver pull over so we can pile out and assault a tarpaper shack in search of treats. None of us seemed to care that there was no running water and only questionable sanitation involved, and none of us ever died from it either.
Yummy yummy fry bread. This recipe actually came from the trip to the Southwest, and my original copy is dated June 13-July 3rd, 1987.
Ingredients
- 3 cups flour (white, or 1/2 whole wheat)
- 1 1/3 cup warm water
- 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
Can You Say Anasazi?
Combine the dry ingredients. Add enough water to make a smooth dough that is workable but not sticky. Knead gently. Tear off small pieces, and flatten with your hands until they are plate-sized. Poke a small hole in the center to allow for better browning. Fry in 1/2" of hot oil until golden brown.
Notes and Hints and Stuff
- Is That All?
I know there aren't many directions, but that's actually more than came with the recipe. If you want more hand-holding, try the Fry Bread recipe that has more ingredients and instructions.
