Cinnamon Ornaments

These ornaments smell lovely, and are very simple to make. Children can help mix the dough and make the ornaments, which can then be baked under adult supervision. They make great Christmas tree ornaments, package ties, or wedding favors!

Supplies

  • 6 tablespoons applesauce
  • 10 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Small bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters, toothpick, stamps
  • Ribbons
  • Oven

    Directions

In the small bowl, mix together the applesauce, cinnamon and cloves. Knead until the consistency is claylike. If it's too stiff to work, add a bit more applesauce.

Sift a layer of cinnamon onto a cutting board, and coat your rolling pin with more. Roll the dough out to 1/8 inch thickness. Using cookie cutters or a knife and a template, cut out shapes. You can use letter stamps, or toothpicks to draw designs in the wet dough. Using a small straw (like a coffee-stirrer), poke a hole in the top for hanging.

Gently transfer the ornaments to a cookie sheet and bake at 120 degrees for 90 minutes. Turn the oven off after 90 minutes, but leave the ornaments in the oven with the door shut overnight, to dry thoroughly.

Decorate with ribbons for hanging, and paint if desired. To preserve the fragrance, store in an airtight container until ready to use.
