Things That Aren't In Your AAA Book (but should be)

Unusual, sometimes weird, and usually fun things to do in and around Seattle. These things aren't likely to be on your average tourist agenda, though they some of them attract more than others.

Theatresports Graveyards Ghost Hunting Corn Maze

  • A-maze-ing Corn Fest
    Through October 15th this Year!

If you've read Children of the Corn, you might want to skip this one. Otherwise, this is about the best time you could possibly have in a big field of corn without the possibility of arrest for tresspassing or indecent exposure. Located north of Seattle, out in farm country, it takes about 40 minutes in decent traffic to get to this giant Maize Maze. Once you're there, get some food, use the restroom, then head into the maze and try to find your way out again! It's a riot and a half. Proceeds are donated to a local community college.

    Tips:
    1) Bring a water bottle with you, preferably one on a strap so you can sling it instead of carrying it in your hand.
    2) Pee before going into the maze. There may be a portapotty hidden in there somewhere, but you may not find it...
    3) Wear sunscreen. It's outdoors.
    4) If you get hopelessly lost, you can use the old Dungeons and Dragons Complete Geek Lost in a Maze Trick to get out. Always turn left, whenever you get to a turn. Basically, keep one hand on the wall to your left, and always follow it. You will get out, probably quickly. You just won't have as much fun being lost. You'll also see a lot of dead ends. Please note: This only works in actual mazes, not in the "Castle" or "Giant Cow" designs.

  • Theatresports
This is a riot. Our local Theatresports group is called Unexpected Productions, and they actually do more theatre than just Theatresports. However, if you want a quick hit, go see them do this improv competition on Friday or Saturday night, or Sunday evening. If you've seen "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" on television, you have a rough idea of what these lunatics do. It's part acting, part stand up, and all funny.

Do call ahead for tickets, and be prepared to stand outside in a really long line. To find the location, call for directions. Or if you're a local or an intrepid explorer, go to Pike Place Market, find the South end of the main level (by the big piggy bank), and then go down the stairs to the south. The theatre is in Post Alley, across the alley from the Alibi room. It's really not as scary an alley as it looks. The line on the right side is for ticket holders, the left side is for ticket sales/pick up. Get there early for good seats!

  • Graveyards
I suppose it's the Goth in me trying to come out and play, but I really like cemeteries. We have some beautiful ones here in Seattle, and my favorites are Lake View Cemetery and Calvary Cemetery. If you're a history buff, a goth, or a fan of statuary, you should definitely visit. The Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery is huge, but overall not as nice as the other two I mentioned.

And of course, most people know that Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Lee, and Brandon Lee are buried up here. Jimi's somewhere down in Renton, and I've never been to the site. Bruce and Brandon are side by side in Lake View Cemetery. To get to the plot from the main gate, drive straight in and aim for the little hill. The are both buried almost at the crest, facing the main gate, on the north east corner of the face of the hill. Look for the offerings left by people, and if all else fails, do what I did the first time I went: ask a groundskeeper.

  • Ghost Hunting
More of the Goth in me trying to express herself, I think. I've always been completely terrified of the idea of meeting up with a ghost, yet they hold a strange fascination for me as well. I'm not even certain I believe in them, but spooky noises in the middle of the night still raise the hair on the back of my neck.

This website doesn't give much information on how to find various locations, but armed with a phone book and the web, you should be able to find most of them. We appear to be a fairly ghost-free section of the country, which could be due to the relative youth of the state, the climate, or the fact that the residents here attribute all scary noises and unexplained sights to their third Grande Nonfat Mocha with Whip.
