Sometimes, the coolest stuff only comes around periodically. These are
fun things that you have to hit at the right times. Mark your calendars!
- A-maze-ing Corn Fest
If you've read Children of the Corn, you might want to skip this one.
Otherwise, this is about the best time you could possibly have in a big field
of corn without the possibility of arrest for tresspassing or indecent
exposure. Located north of Seattle, out in farm country, it takes about 40
minutes in decent traffic to get to this giant Maize Maze. Once you're there,
get some food, use the restroom, then head into the maze and try to find your
way out again! It's a riot and a half. Proceeds are donated to a local
community college.
Tips:
1) Bring a water bottle with you, preferably one on a strap so you can sling
it instead of carrying it in your hand.
2) Pee before going into the maze. There may be a portapotty hidden in there
somewhere, but you may not find it...
3) Wear sunscreen. It's outdoors.
4) If you get hopelessly lost, you can use the old Dungeons and Dragons
Complete Geek Lost in a Maze Trick to get out. Always turn left, whenever
you get to a turn. Basically, keep one hand on the wall to your left, and
always follow it. You will get out, probably quickly. You just won't
have as much fun being lost. You'll also see a lot of dead ends.
Please note: This only works in actual mazes, not in the "Castle" or
"Giant Cow" designs.
- Bumbershoot
Bumbershoot is of course another name for a large umbrella. Fitting for a
festival held in Seattle, no? It's over Labor Day weekend, and involves
much music and enough noise to be heard on Capital Hill. Lots of food and
vendors, really worth wandering around if you're not crowd phobic.
- Folklife
And yet another Seattle Hippy-Fest. It's the other end of summer, which
I suppose I should have listed first, but it's not quite as big as
Bumbershoot, so it gets second billing. It's Memorial Day weekend, and jams
up traffic quite as nicely as Bumbershoot or anything else at the Center.
Lots of food and vendors and "hippy-type" entertainment, folk music, dancing,
things of that nature. Hugely crowded, I recommend the bus for both this
and Bumbershoot. Consult the local Metro guide, they add shuttles for both of these celebrations.
- Bite of Seattle
And yet something else to screw up traffic. This is all about the food,
baby. Pay an entrance fee, then go and pay small amounts to sample foods
from a variety of local restaurants. Waddle home.
