Eclectic Eats

(A Hodgepodge of Area Restaurants I Like)

I'm still trying to figure out where I like to eat in Portland. But I already have some out and out favorites, while I look for others!

Alessandro's The Rheinlander Marrakesh

    Alessandro's
Oh. Man. Italian food...the best. Their tortellini is absolutely to die for. The service is excellent, and at least one guy there has a great Italian accent. Do go hungry, do save room for excellent coffee and dessert, and do save some for lunch the next day. It's fairly easy to find in downtown, easy access by Max, or there's parking in the same building.

    The Rheinlander
This has been one of my favorite restaurants since I was literally a toddler. I'd ask to go there every year for my birthday. There are wandering people playing accordion, but don't let that deter you. It's very Bavarian inside, and their cheese fondue is wonderful. My favorite dish is the Sauerbraaten, which is a marinated, tender beef dish. My close second is their potato pancakes, with double applesauce. Their chocolate mousse is very thick and creamy and heavenly as well. Make reservations if you are going on a weekend evening or on an "occasion" night like Prom, or Valentine's Day.

    Marrakesh
Did I say the Rheinlander was my favorite? This one sure is close behind. I only discovered it recently, more by accident and "Let's Play Entertainment Guide Roulette" than anything. It's Moroccan food, and everything I've tried there was wonderful, with the single exception of a fruit cocktail dessert that was too heavily spiced for my tastes. The bastilla is great. The honey chicken with prunes is wonderful, though messy. Plan to spend 2 hours minimum and at least $20 per person, but it's a fun time.

Weekends they have bellydancers, which is fun. Be prepared to sit on very low cushions or low sofas, and be prepared to eat with your fingers. If you want to be VERY proper, only eat with your right hand. If you want to be completely American, you can ask for silverware. The server will bring a basin to your table to wash your hands before beginning the meal, and between the main course and the dessert. You simply choose your entree, and they will bring the rest out to you in courses. It's a bit of a challenge to the American schema, but it's fun.
